Kate Martin is a Birmingham based artist, who for a long time struggled with depression. It was her art and creativity that in the end saved her and changed her life for the better in a way that she never dreamed could be a reality. The creativity that she has been able to tap into over the past 3 years has been the single, most stabilising thing that she has found for maintaining her mental health and keeping her depression at bay. Kate says,
“Creativity is good for you, it’s good for your body, mind and soul. It allows you to express yourself without any limitations or judgement or conditions. Creativity is magical and mysterious, it is an incredible thing and I can’t stress enough how it has helped change my life for the better. There is a wonderful quote by Picasso that sums this up perfectly:
‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life’
To be my most creative I have to let go, I have to give myself over to whatever will be and just be. It really is as though I am washing away a lot of what I don’t need to hold onto and renewing something else within me that is of much more value. Creativity comes in many forms, find what resonates with you and go for it”.
