Jos Mous, 1896-1968, was educated at the Antwerp Academy and at the NHISKA under the leadership of R. Baseleer. In 1922 he was awarded with the Prix de Rome. In addition to being a painter and an illustrator, he was also a successful sculptor. From 1949 to 1966 he taught at the drawing school and later at the academy of Turnhout. Work by Mous was listed in the department “Arbeid aan de haven” in the museum of Antwerp.
Two genres stand out in the oeuvre of Mous: harvest scenes with heavy farm labour and the scenes from the harbour life in Antwerp with the hard working dock workers.
